Child Abuse Victims

There is no crime worse than a crime against a child. Child abuse and neglect have life-long ramifications for the victim, leaving deep physical and emotional scars. These young victims of abuse need to know that they are not alone, and that the abuse is not their fault. We will work with you and your child to minimize any additional trauma of the investigation and to ensure that the abuser is brought to justice by being held financially and legally responsible for both the personal injury and economic losses caused by their acts.

This area is a particular focus of our practice and we have been involved litigating these cases since 1977. Few lawyers have the experience, the compassion, or the gentle but firm demeanor that is required in the courtroom.

There are three main types of child abuse: sexual, emotional, and physical. Physical child abuse is anything that results in a physical injury to the child, such as:

  • Shaking;
  • Kicking;
  • Hitting;
  • Burning; or
  • Any other type of bodily harm

Emotional child abuse can include:

  • Excessive vulgar language;
  • Excessive shouting or yelling at the child;
  • Name calling; or
  • ;Making fun of, belittling or degrading the child

Sexual abuse can include:

  • Child Molestation;
  • Rape of a Child;
  • Communication with a Minor for an Immoral Purpose;
  • Exhibitionism;
  • Exposure to sexual videos, games, pictures or other images;
  • Forced viewing of sexual acts; or
  • Any other lewd or obscene behavior

Obviously, abusers themselves can be held liable for their actions. But they will often have little to no financial ability to bear the cost of treatment and care required. In some cases it is also possible to hold liable related third parties, such as schools, employers, or daycare centers if it can be shown that they contributed to, or enabled, the abusers. The most clear example of this is the tragic story of Penn State and its handling of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse. The law has no tolerance for those who abuse children or those who allow others to abuse children.
